Port Calls
Port Calls
A port call is required when a vessel arrives at, stops at, or departs from a Finnish port or anchorage.
Manage your organization's port calls in the Port Calls view, which can be accessed from the Port Calls option in the main menu.
Creating a Port Call
Creating a port call corresponds to submitting a VID notification. When a port call is created, a unique identifier called the Visit ID is generated. This Visit ID serves as the reference for all notifications related to that port call.
Anchorage Calls and Reporting Requirements
An anchorage call must be reported as a port call when a vessel arrives at an anchorage and remains there for at least 24 hours.
Create a new port call for anchorage-related voyages in the following situations:
- The vessel arrives at an anchorage from abroad.
- The vessel moves from an anchorage to a berth in the same port.
- The vessel moves from a berth to an anchorage within the same port.
- The vessel moves from the anchorage of one port to the anchorage of another port.
The port must be reported using the corresponding UN/LOCODE.

Creating a Port Call for a Vessel Not Yet Registered in NEMO
If the vessel cannot yet be found in NEMO, you can create a port call for a new vessel:
- Click Add New Vessel.
- Enter the vessel name.
Enter the vessel identification details. At least one identifier must be provided:
- IMO number
- MMSI number
- Call sign
- Other vessel identifier (Traficom ID)
For barges, use the Traficom ID as the other vessel identifier.
Identification details must match the vessel's official documentation. Pay particular attention to the IMO number before creating the port call.
Once an IMO number has been saved in NEMO for the first time, it cannot later be changed by the notifier through a SID notification or any other notification.
If an incorrect IMO number has been entered, create a new port call for the correct vessel and continue reporting under that vessel. Also report the incorrect vessel or IMO number to NEMO Support at nemo.support@fintraffic.fi.
If the vessel's identification details are available from NEMO's data sources, the system may automatically populate information in draft SID, SHP, and NOA notifications.
Review all automatically populated data carefully. Correct any inaccurate or incomplete information before submitting notifications.
The information is stored in NEMO's vessel information service only after the relevant notifications have been submitted.
- Search for and select the port by city name or UN/LOCODE.
- Enter the port area and berth, if known.
- Enter ETA (Estimated Time of Arrival).
- Enter ETD (Estimated Time of Departure), if known.
- Click Confirm.
You will be taken to the newly created port call.
If the vessel was added as a new vessel in NEMO, submit SID, SHP, and CRT notifications as required before submitting other port call notifications. Detailed instructions and required attachments can be found in the notification-specific guidance.
Creating a Port Call for a Vessel Already Registered in NEMO
If a port call has previously been created for the vessel in NEMO, the system uses the information already stored for that vessel.
- Click Create Port Call.
- Search for and select the vessel.
- Verify the vessel identifiers and information:
- IMO number
- MMSI number
- Call sign
- Other vessel identifier (Traficom ID)
For barges, the Traficom ID is used as the other vessel identifier.
NEMO may automatically populate vessel information from available data sources based on the vessel identifiers. Carefully verify the automatically populated information. If you identify errors or missing information, update the vessel information after creating the port call using the appropriate notifications.
Read more in section 3.3 Vessel Information.
The following information may also be displayed:
- Vessel name
- Finnish ice class confirmation
Then:
- Search for and select the port by city name or UN/LOCODE.
- Enter the port area and berth, if known.
- Enter ETA (Estimated Time of Arrival).
- Enter ETD (Estimated Time of Departure), if known.
- Click Confirm.
You will be taken to the newly created port call.
Requesting Confirmation of a Finnish Ice Class
Vessels operating in Finnish ports are assigned a Finnish ice class, which affects fairway dues and eligibility for icebreaker assistance.
Read more about Finnish ice classes on Traficom's website.Opens in a new tab
Request confirmation when the vessel's Finnish ice class is missing from NEMO or is not up to date:
- Add a CRT notification (Vessel Certificate Document) to the port call.
- Attach the classification certificate to the notification.
- Request confirmation of the Finnish ice class.
Once the request has been processed, the vessel's ice class information will be updated in NEMO.
If the ice class shown in NEMO does not match the classification certificate most recently submitted, Traficom has not yet updated the information in the ice class register. In that case, submit a new CRT notification if necessary and request confirmation again.
If no Finnish ice class has been recorded in NEMO, the vessel will automatically be assigned the lowest ice class and fairway dues will be calculated accordingly.
Special Case: Barges, Tugs, and Pushboats
Barges, tugs, and pushboats are reported in NEMO as separate vessels. Each vessel has its own port call and related notifications.
Common vessel types:
- 840 – Tug (Tug, single)
- 843 – Pushboat (Pushboat, single)
- 815 – Freight Barge
- 816 – Tank Barge
A pushboat must be reported as a pushboat even if it is towing or pushing a barge.
Case 1: Tug Transporting a Barge
If a tug transports a barge, the tug and the barge must be reported separately.
- Create a separate port call for the tug.
- Select 840 – Tug in the NOA field DE-005-16 Ship Type.
- Create a separate port call for the barge.
- Select 815 – Freight Barge or 816 – Tank Barge in the NOA field DE-005-16 Ship Type.
- Report the barge cargo using the barge's own cargo notifications.
- Do not report the barge cargo in the tug's notifications.
Case 2: Pushboat Transporting a Barge
If a pushboat transports a barge, the pushboat and the barge must be reported separately in the same way as a tug and barge combination.
- Create a separate port call for the pushboat.
- Select 843 – Pushboat in the NOA field DE-005-16 Ship Type.
- Create a separate port call for the barge.
- Select 815 – Freight Barge or 816 – Tank Barge in the NOA field DE-005-16 Ship Type.
- Report the barge cargo using the barge's own cargo notifications.
- Do not report the barge cargo in the pushboat's notifications.
Case 3: Cargo Transferred from an Ocean-Going Vessel to a Barge
Typically, cargo transferred from an ocean-going vessel to a barge is transferred outside Finnish territorial waters. In this case, the ocean-going vessel may not submit a port call notification to Finland.
Only the cargo carried by the barge is reported to Finland.
- Create the port call for the barge as normal.
- Enter the ocean-going vessel's IMO number in the barge's CGA notification field DE-003-01 Additional information for the formality.
- If the barge is transported by a tug or pushboat, also enter the ocean-going vessel's IMO number in the tug's or pushboat's NOA notification field DE-003-01 Additional information for the formality.
- Report as the port of loading the port where the cargo was originally loaded onto the ocean-going vessel.
- Do not report a sea area or cargo transfer location as the port of loading.
Example: Coal is loaded onto an ocean-going vessel in Canada. Part of the cargo is transferred at sea to a barge before arrival in Finland. The barge reports the cargo to Finland and uses the original Canadian loading port as the port of loading.
More detailed instructions are available in the NOA, CGA, and CGD guidance.
Viewing Port Calls
You can view port calls as either cards or a list. Change the display mode using the buttons at the top of the Port Calls view.
Port call information includes:
- Vessel name and IMO number (shown in parentheses after the name)
- Port UN/LOCODE
- Port area and/or berth, if reported
- ETA (Estimated Time of Arrival)
- ETD (Estimated Time of Departure)
- Clock icon indicating notifications that are approaching their deadline
- Delegated organization, if reporting responsibility has been delegated to another organization
In list view, port calls for the selected period are displayed in table format. The list view shows the same basic information as the card view, plus the Visit ID and the port call status.
Click a card or a list row to view detailed information.
Port Call Status
The port call status indicates the current stage of the port call:
- Arrival not confirmed – A port call has been created for the vessel.
- Expected arrival – Arrival pre-notification information has been submitted.
- In port – The vessel's actual arrival has been reported.
- Departed – The vessel's actual departure has been reported.
- Cancelled – The port call has been cancelled.
Port calls with the status Cancelled are not displayed by default. They can be displayed using filters.
Filtering Port Calls
You can narrow the displayed port calls by changing the date range or using advanced filters.
By default, port calls are shown from the current day through the next six days. If no port calls exist, you will see the message:
Your organization has no port calls.
If port calls are not displayed as expected, verify the selected date range and active filters.
Selecting a long date range may increase loading times.
Advanced Filtering
Open the filter panel using the button in the upper-right corner of the view.
You can:
- Open a specific port call by entering its Visit ID
- Filter port calls by:
- Vessel name or identifier (IMO number, Call Sign, or MMSI number)
- Port (UN/LOCODE or city name)
- Port call start or end time
- Port call status
- Arrival or departure confirmation status
- Submitted notification type
- Domestic or international traffic for arrivals or departures
Cancelling a Port Call
Once a port call has been created, the selected vessel and port cannot be changed. If either changes, cancel the port call and create a new one with the correct information.
If the vessel does not arrive at the port, the port call must be cancelled in NEMO. Cancelling a port call corresponds to submitting a COA notification and cancels both the port call and all related notifications.
A port call cannot be cancelled if an ATA notification (Actual Time of Arrival notification) has already been submitted.
To cancel a port call:
- Select the port call you want to cancel.
- Click Cancel Port Call.
- Enter the reason for cancellation and click Confirm.
No new notifications can be submitted and existing notifications can no longer be edited after cancellation. Previously submitted information remains available for review.
